About
Brüer Tidman (1939–2024) was a British painter renowned for his semi-abstract works that delved into human relationships and emotions. Born in Rackheath, Norwich, he moved to Great Yarmouth at an early age, where he spent most of his life.
Tidman began his artistic journey at Great Yarmouth College of Art, followed by studies at the Royal College of Art in London during the early 1960s, a period marked by the rise of pop art and artists like David Hockney.
Throughout his career, Tidman exhibited widely, including in London, Amsterdam, Zurich, Manchester, Cambridge, Finland, and Belgium. His works are held in several public collections, notably the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
Tidman's art often explored themes such as the artist and model, the nude, and mother and child, employing masterful techniques with layered pigments and diverse paint types. A significant series of his work focused on circus performers, inspired by his observations at the Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth.
As a member of the "Yarmouth Five," a group of Great Yarmouth artists, Tidman contributed to the local art scene alongside peers like Katarzyna Coleman, Bridget Heriz, John Kiki, and Emrys Parry.
Brüer Tidman passed away in September 2024, leaving behind a legacy of art that continues to resonate with audiences.
