About

Philip Sutton (1928–2019) was an English-born Australian artist known for his vibrant, abstract style that combined figurative elements with a bold use of color. After moving to Australia in the late 1940s, Sutton became a prominent figure in the Melbourne art scene. He was one of the leading proponents of the modernist movement in Australia during the mid-20th century.

Sutton's work often featured simplified, geometric shapes and bright, contrasting colors, drawing influence from European modernism while also reflecting his deep engagement with the Australian landscape and culture. His use of thick, expressive brushstrokes and dynamic compositions created an immediately recognizable style.

He was also a noted teacher and educator, inspiring many younger artists. Sutton’s work spanned painting, printmaking, and design, and he had a significant impact on Australian art. His works are held in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.
